How to Assemble a DIY Gift Hamper at Home
Why DIY a Hamper?
Making your own gift hamper lets you choose exactly what goes inside, control the budget, and add a deeply personal touch. As professional hamper curators at Dispatching Joy, we've assembled thousands of hampers — and we're sharing our exact process so you can do it at home.
What You'll Need
The container: A basket, box, tray, or even a fabric tote. Size depends on how many items you're including — a medium basket (12"×8") fits 5-8 items perfectly.
Filler material: Shredded paper (kraft or colored), tissue paper, or dried flowers. This creates a base and keeps items secure.
The items: 5-8 items that share a theme. More on this below.
Wrapping: Cellophane wrap or fabric wrap, ribbon, a gift tag, and optional dried flower sprig.
Step-by-Step Assembly
Step 1: Choose a Theme
Every great hamper has a theme: "Coffee Lover," "Spa Day," "Foodie Treats," or "New Home." A theme guides your item selection and makes the hamper feel curated rather than random.
Step 2: Select Your Items
Mix textures and sizes: something tall (bottle/candle), something flat (book/chocolate bar), something small (lip balm/tea bag), and something edible. Variety keeps it interesting.
Step 3: Prepare the Base
Fill the bottom third of your container with scrunched filler paper. Create a slight slope — taller items go at the back, shorter ones in front.
Step 4: Arrange the Items
Place the tallest item first at the back. Layer medium items around it. Tuck small items in the gaps. Everything should be visible from the front.
Step 5: Secure and Wrap
Use small pieces of tape to keep items from shifting. Wrap the entire hamper in cellophane, gather at the top, and tie with ribbon. Attach your card with a decorative clip.
Pro Tips from Our Hamper Experts
Odd numbers of items look better than even. Color coordinate your items and filler. Always include at least one "surprise" item they wouldn't buy themselves. And never underestimate the power of a handwritten note — it transforms a gift hamper into a treasured memory.
